Cheriyal Bathukamma Pooja Painting – Round Ethnic Wall Art

About the Cheriyal Bathukamma Pooja Painting

The Cheriyal Bathukamma Pooja Painting beautifully captures the vibrant scroll painting tradition of Cheriyal, a testament to Telangana’s rich storytelling heritage. This distinctive Telangana traditional painting was historically intertwined with storytellers who captivated rural audiences with mythological and local tales.

Artistic Heritage and Technique

Traditionally, these narratives were painted on long, vertical scrolls. Artisans meticulously prepared the surface using a blend of khadi cloth treated with tamarind seed paste, rice starch, and white clay. This created a smooth canvas for their artistry.

The themes explored were diverse, drawing inspiration from epic tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, alongside regional folklore and social customs. Occupational stories from various communities also featured prominently. The style is characterized by:

• Bold, clear outlines.

• Flat, simplified figures.

• Vibrant and striking colors, with red often forming the dominant background.

• Human figures with large, expressive eyes and lively forms, making each scene easily readable and engaging.

Each scroll was traditionally divided into distinct panels, with each panel depicting a segment of a story. As storytellers narrated, they would gradually unfurl the scroll, enhancing the visual and auditory experience for their audience. This art form served not just as decoration, but as a vital medium for learning and entertainment in rural Telangana.
